I joined about four years ago because we had bought our first home and it had a shabby garden. Neither of us had taken a real interest in gardening up to then, but our goals were relatively unambitious so we just made one improvement at a time. It started with advice about removing the trees to improve light and let the lawn grow:
That created a bit of a blank canvas, and since then I've asked lots of questions about plants for the flower beds. I've hung around because I've surprised myself I can sometimes contribute to other people's issues(!). I'm yet to identify a plant for someone though
The knowledge and enthusiasm on this board means we now both love gardening. We're still real novices, but we love learning. One day, when we know what we're doing, we would like to give the garden a proper makeover. But in the meantime we work without any master plan and simply address one problem at a time. We now have RHS membership and am frequent visitors of Wisley, drawing inspiration from there too.
This year, more than ever, I can't wait for Spring so I can see all of our wonderful plants in bloom again - it's like anticipating the arrival of good friends! Never thought I would say that

Love the forum it’s like having a information book to hand, also can be funny, supportive, and although I haven’t met any of the members I feel I know them some what.
BBC opened a new History board in the year 2000 and from there I met people on the BBC gardening boards and from there to this one as BBC closed down the relevant boards. This was gentle and friendly, the people posting knew Gardening and I realised that though we may answer the same questions many times the people asking need help, willingly given. Long may it be so.
I was a lurker a long time before I plucked up the courage to ask a question. I had moved into a property where I had complete control of what I did in the garden. OH not really interested in gardening, but always willing to help with any heavy lifting. I was looking for ideas as to what I could with my blank canvas.
Found the forum by chance. It's great to get answers to the 'I wonder why....' questions that pop onto my head when I'm doing mindless gardening tasks. I also enjoy the smiles or hoots with the banter in the potting shed
I garden at home and OH isn't much interested, so I looked for somewhere to get some advice as well as just to talk about gardening. Googling a few questions brought me to this site a few times, so I joined. It's been a great help, identified lots of plants, lots of general advice. And also I'd never watched Beechgrove before seeing some recommends here for it - I love it - and am now taking turmeric supplements, so it's not just gardening advice I've gained

The Sunday spam is often amusing too.
