Bare rooted phlox

I have just received as a freebie, 6 bare rooted phlox paniculata mixed and am not sure what I should do?. Is it ok to put these in the ground now?

My first thought was to soak the roots as they did look rather dry.

What are the best conditions for this plant and how should I plant them? Is this a plant that will need lots of attention, will it come up again as a perennial or just a short lived plant. Any advice welcome.

Thank you

Perennial, sun / partial shade, in my experience need moist soil.

    Easy plants to care for.

I would pot them up for a while and then plant them out in late Spring.

  • I'd pot them up and grow them on in a cool greenhouse, cold frame or sheltered spot.  Plant them out when they've bulked up a bit and the weather has improved.

They're a lovely perennial which will form substantial clumps of colour for you each summer.  Also a very good cut flower.

  • How do I tell which end is which? They look like a spidery tangle of roots and difficult to tell where the shoots will pop up from?

  • Cam you post a photo of one of them ... start with the camera icon and follow the instructions ... if the photo doesn't appear reducing the size usually works.

  • I've tried sending photos before but as I'm only using my mobile and it never seems to work on my phone. The icon isn't even available for me to use it. ?

  • Oh 'eck ... I'll flag it up to NoraGW in the website team and see if she has any ideas ...

  • I just tried as I have the camera icon but it doesn't seem to add the photos even if I click on it. I seem to remember this was a topic some time ago with people using  certain types of phones. Maybe if I had an iPad or iPhone it wouldn't be an issue? I'll check with the GW team to see if they can help. Thanks.

  • I am assuming twiggy end is the stem, but how deep should I plant it?

  • Yay!  Thanks Nora image

Yes, the stick bit to the left of the picture is the top.  I would plant it so that about half of that 'stick' is poking out of the soil.
