DL - previous owners painted an oak staircase white and then banned all shoes from using it.  I am not so precious and not too keen on grbby white either so need to decide whether to let it quietly strip back to the oak or paint it again to make it smart and then ban shoes.

We had a natural oak staircase in Belgium and chestnut floorboards upstairs - very hard wearing once oiled and just needed regular hoovering and an occasional wipe with a  damp cloth.

Here we have a traditional Vendéen oak staircase and she's painted both steps and spindles in white.  It'll be a nightmare to strip and restore so I'm leaving it till all other decorating and furniture shuffling is done.   Her hubby laid laminate all over upstairs - heaven knows why - so I may need to ban shoes anyway as it's nowhere near as immune to shoes and grit as proper wood.

Thanks Obxx. These rods were for 'bending to my will' - is there something I should know about the benefits of rusty ones over new ones?

I have to confess to loving having my hair cut! (I don't like paying for it, mind image). I've never had make up done or nails done and I don't like to have to 'do' my hair either, but I love having it cut. It's probably partly to do with having very short hair and liking it that way - when it gets all long and shaggy I enjoy feeling and looking like myself again after a cut. But even when I had long hair or medium length hair in my teens and 20s, I enjoyed it. If it didn't cost so much I'd have it done more often.

I like painted wood a lot, but I think I would strip the staircase too, if I could face the work.

New ones will rust in time.  The rusty ones are cheap and if you get 5mm thick are bendable round a post or trunk and you can choose your own lengths, tho you'll need some bolt cutters.

I don't suit short hair and layered cuts or bobs have to be twiddled each day and, on straight hair, every mistake with the scissors shows.

LG....I sympathize with you but I can't freaking bend down to cut my toenails like I used to do ......I used to be able to put my left foot behind my head ......no, that's a joke .....

Made up beds for DIL and family, OH's 2 grandchildren, for Sunday and now I'm making another batch of marmalade. Daughter 2 and family love it and we are going to lunch with her on Sunday. DIL is going to stay Saturday night with her then is coming here.

We wear slippers indoors. Son 2's wife has collected those free white ones from staying in hotels and she offers them to guests. Son 1 and wife don't mind shoes, they are sort of chaotic, son 2's wife is a minimalist, likes everything white, Son 1 and wife like colour and clutter. Think I maybe more like son 2, apart from the slippers.

Busy....with young children around, is it not a bit of a headache having everything white?

Having a lovely time imagining everyone’s staircases!

Lg screwfix is my oh s favourite, in fact I think he is ordering something now!

Busy dont you love the smell of freshly marmalade going through the house  we collect all the slippers too!

Punk glad you enjoyed your walk hope you feel better for it.

the mechanic came about 11. Poor man was freezing, it was -3  kept him topped up with coffee.

car is fixed but it will “go”again so needs to be booked in which is a real pain as we go off soon and it’s booked into airport carpark.  Apparently it will always go into “limp”mode. I know how it feels!

oh it’s sooooo cold out there

    Evening all.

We allow shoes into utility room and breakfast room / kitchen. Beyond that lie hand knotted Kashmiri rugs so shoes are a no no.

The new neighbour brought the first of the horse poo round this afternoon. I said it was ok to dump it beside the woodchip the tree surgeons leave.

Worzle is back in the garage and I'm not looking forward to the bill.

  • Hello folks ... we're back ... new hygienist was very complimentary about my home toothcare  image image

We bought some lovely fresh cod for supper this evening,, an oxtail for tomorrow and a joint for the weekend ........... however after the dentist I joined OH on the sofa in the Lamb and after some Adnams beer and a big helping of nachos and stuff each we're both stuffed to the gills ... the cod will be cooked tomorrow and the oxtail on Friday ........ if we're hungry later on we can have toast and there's some spiced parsnip soup in the fridge ... OH also bought a bar of chocolate, so we won't starve image

As for the maquillage ... one would have thought that a perk of having reached the age of 27 would be that we have worked out what suits us ......... so why is it that 'they' then decide to stop making it image

We have waxed parquet and a big cowhide rug downstairs and carpets on the stairs and upstairs  ... no shoes allowed upstairs ........NOT EVER!!!!

Dacha image when the Russian ex DIL and her Mama visited us they would always bring pretty knitted slippers in their handbags to wear indoors ....... they were very impressed when I knitted a pair of slippers for them to take home for Baboushka ... they didn't think English women could do that image
