Despite it feeling like spring has been incredibly late here this year, it just so happens that Ive taken a photo of the same bit of the front garden on the 2nd May every year for the last 4 years, and though it may be just a little behind this year, it turns out that its actually not that far from usual, apart from being a bit more ragged after the last couple of weeks hail, wind and rain.

so lovely. What are the white flowers? Do the orange tulips always return?

I didnt plant them, they just popped up and spread like crazy. I think they are Star of Bethlehem Ornithogalum umbellatum, but Im not sure. They only open when its sunny and close when the sun passes over the house in the afternoon and the front is in shadow. No sign of them flowering yet this year so they are much later.

The orange tulips are Ballerina. They were just from Tesco or somewhere. They have been absolutely superb for coming back. I thought they would be a one off so I popped some more in the after the first year but practically all of them came back as strong as first time round and have done ever since. Its well drained and a bit sandy in the front so that probably helps. I give them a good feed after flowering deadhead and then I leave all that to die down a bit and then give it a cut around the end of may and then it reverts to lawn for the rest of the year

thanks. Theyre spanish bluebells which isn't ideal, but there are no natives nearby and they are tough as old boots, and dont seem to mind the lawnmower taking all their foliage away before its become too unsightly, and to be honest they look lovely when they are all out so I can cope with them being pesky invaders

Thank you, but just been having a mooch round outside and decided its definitely looking a bit sorrier than usual this year. Its the first time the tulips have started going over before the bluebells are fully out, and just noticed the crown imperials have all given up after a strong start. Roll on the warmer weather this weekend!

Here are some of my beautiful spring flowers, as soon as the sun is out and it warms up the garden comes to life. And the smells are wonderful.
