    Thanks @punkdoc, and thanks for the info about chelsea chopping them, maybe I'll stick with staking next year after all then and cut them back now. They are meant to reach 1.2m, mine are more like 2m though!

    @Fire this one's for you.  My first  claret  sunflower . But it's  a weird one  - multiple blooms , even in the leaf axils.  The rest are bog standard  and nowhere near blooming .

    Ah, more the colour I imagined claret it to be. What is the other type?

    They're all clarets, but I think they're supposed to be singles. That's what it said on the packet, but I'm not complaining
