Boggy garden raising the level

So my garden is terrible. Ive decided im going to border is with sleepers and raise the level in the hope this solves it. Its about 25m squared. Ive bought 50m perforated drainage pipe to lay down first onto some pea gravel so what i was wondering is. Shall i then cover the full garden with rubble and whacker.plate is flat to build up the level? Then some more pea gravel or sand??

Finially finish with topsoil, i really hope this works as it will cost a fair bit and will be labourous

Thank you

where are you draining it to? a sump, a drain? as if you're using drainage pipe you need to send it somewhere otherwise you're just moving the problem

Also, if you raise the level of your garden is your house going to be lower than the surface of the garden? as you could get a damp problem in your houses foundations

  • I have a patio thats 4m house to grass and the garden is on a slight slope away from the house.

I was planning on digging a large trench at the bottom of the garden and filling it with rubble???

that sounds like a good plan then,

one question, whats on the other side of the fence from where you're putting the trench?

because if you flood someone else's property, you could be in trouble.

  • Its wasteland so should be ok. Id like to dig the trench the other side of my fence but thats just asking for trouble further down the line. So do you think building the garden up with rubble and stones/sand is a good way to go

you could put a re-vetting wall in at the fence line (with drains put thru it) and back fill with rubble in the bottom (covering the ends of the drains) and 6 inches minimum of sandy top soil on top, that way you get a level garden and drainage, the plus side is you can concrete fence posts into the wall and make it your back fence as well.

  • I thik i understand what you mean. Was planning on a 6inch topsoil but what would you use to make up the height for the whole garden area

    Thanks for your help

you can buy sandy subsoil in bulk, where i am its about £30-40 a tonne bag, i would put 6 inches of topsoil (about £50-60 a tonne) on top of sub soil on top of 6F2 hardcore - so named as the sizes are from 2cm to 6cm, so big stuff, not powder (not whacked down, but firmed - you want space for the water to move through it) you need 3 - 4inches of hardcore with drainage pipes within that layer if you really want to help drainage,

so depending on how much you want to increase the depth depends on how much subsoil you need.

  • Excellent thanks very much. 1 last question. Is it best to snake the drainpipe in the garden or cut it into lengths and lay em down the slope. Ive got a 50m roll

If you have problems with drainage I would have thought the last thing you would want to do is compact the ground even more by using a whacker plate on it.  Land drains and soakaway ditch sound like a good idea.

  • Gotchya. Keep it loose for the water to flow through it
