We don’t get those in the UK according to Mr Google.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

My half-arsed quest to find all the snail species in the UK has ticked up by one.
This weekend I found the Striped Snail (Cernuella virgata) which ticks another one off the list.

Thank you for that @wild edges  They are quite wicked!

I wrote this  at the end of August in reply to your link and then forgot to press "post".  Sorry.

The link is so precise - again thank you Wild Edges.
A good hoeing is worth two waterings.

  • I've recently removed my metal post box which was sited on a stone wall alongside the road.  Stuff was constantly nibbled away but not noticeably along the glue flap.  The snail residents were obviously community minded as they tended to leave the Parish Magazine  alone unless desperate.
I also recall many years ago when I lived in a small hamlet in Cornwall, the Royal Mail post box was regularly inhabited by snails - you never knew if anything you posted would arrive intact  :D
  • Death Report............ sad to say that Big White has expired.
Am wondering whether the Whites are less adaptable than the Browns as Small White was first to give up.
Out of 2 Whites and 1 Brown, only Brown is left despite being slightly smaller than Big White.

Are you sure they’ve e not just gone into hibernation @philippa,  mine have done the same,  retreated right deep into the shell.

  • No such luck I'm afraid Lyn.  Hadn't moved for a couple of days and hadn't retracted into his shell. Neither of them have been eating really and when I went to clean them out and change their turf, I noticed a bad smell.
Carefully gave him a warm water wipe down but he still stunk.  No reaction or movement and when I got hold of his head and gently pulled, out he slithered.
