I have it in my lawn which was probably laid about 26 years ago when the house was built. Not degraded at all, viscious stuff.

I've just contacted Turfonline who use mesh and say it biodegrades I've asked for a sample of mesh so I can check for myself. Will report back though it may take some time.

  • I think if consumers were aware of plastic mesh in turf they wouldn’t buy it. It is horrendous stuff and is only used to hold substandard turf together. It is appalling that so many companies sell and use it. There is such a growing concern amongst gardeners about our impact on the environment but nothing is  publicised about plastic mesh in lawns. 🤔
  • It doesn't matter if it degrades or not. I've pulled some of this stuff from my lawn and it's difficult to break with your hands. A digging mammal or bird caught in the mesh would have no chance.

I think Chris Packham is active on twitter, and this would likely be something he would bring to wider attention. Has any twitter users attempted to link him examples?

@SueAtoo Do you mean "it may take some time for the mesh to degrade? Well, it may take centuries... :(

I have now raised this problem with the RHS.

Who knows, maybe they can mount a campaign about plastic misuse or at least warn their membership about plastic mesh hiding in lawn turf.

I did contact GW again and had a response along the lines of 'this is something we may consider investigating'.
  • I have just extended a border, when removing turf I found mesh still in the lawn it hadn’t degraded and it’s been down nearly 10 years.
It is Rolawn turf and they too said it is biodegradable 🙄

@Papi Jo  No, I expected the reply would take some time - and I haven't heard yet....
