I had missed these last few posts somehow. That is indeed a powerful image. @frankmay I'll pm you later.

I've got this in my lawn.

I'd say it's an inch deep into the soil though. I only noticed after digging up and disposing of chunks of turf to make borders.

Disgusted that this has been allowed.

I discovered this thread after researching plastic mesh in garden turf. I moved into a new build almost two years ago now. Recently I was doing a little work in the garden and discovered this plastic mesh. I managed to slice my hand on it which made me realise how nasty it is. On closer inspection I found numerous patches in the garden where this mesh has started to come through. We have dogs and a little one on the way and this appear to be an accident waiting to happen. Recently we have had starlings in the garden and since I'm a keen photographer I snapped some photos, however I was shocked to see that one starling had this plastic mesh wrapped around it's head and was clearly struggling :( I will be contacting my home builder to hopefully get this addressed and will also try to find out the company they used and turf supplier. I'll also contact the RSPB to see what they say. If this stuff is being used in gardens throughout the UK I can only imagine that it's contributing to the death of hundreds of thousands of birds and other garden visitors.
    Oh my god! :(

  • Our turf was rolawn, are other turf suppliers using mesh in their turf?

Some almost certainly, but not all.  One local company was advertising on FB so I asked them and they said they didn't use it.

I came here after googling about mesh in lawn.

I bought my lawn from B&Q 3/4 years ago. I thought I was getting such a bargain for some reasonable looking turf. I look back now with a lot of regret.

Firstly, i didn't prep the ground as well as i should. Drainage was fine, but used Compost instead of top soil. Looked fantastic going down but is very spongy now, which is probably why the grass hasn't taken well.

Before noticing the mesh I took a scarifier to it, hoping to remove some of the mess to allow me to reseed. Safe to say, it did not go well.

Thankfully i have seen nothing like frankmay posted.

My Rolawn Medallion turf has been down for 7 years.

I am currently in the process of ripping it up as the combination of dogs, grubs and birds has all but destroyed it over the last year

The netting has in no way degraded or even weakend.

Infact It is very tough to rip out of the ground and feels quite strong.

@frankmay did you get any response from the RSPB?

  • I was horrified to find this plastic wildlife death-trap in my lawn which was was laid 10 months ago after scarifying the lawn like many others on this forum. Shockingly I was not informed of its use; what gardener would agree to it? I am in the process of pulling it up. There should be a campaign to ban this stuff from our gardens. Does anyone know if this has been brought to public attention? Come on Gardener’s World; get behind it!

I contacted GW about this some years ago and never even got a response.
