The problem with that theory is that it doesn't hold for the wagtail species that don't generally live near water, why do they still do it if they generally live on farmland? My favourite theory is that they do it to scare up the small flies and things they feed on that might otherwise stay camouflaged. It's probably a bit of both though.

There's a lovely bird imprint on my greenhouse roof. I thought it might be the print of a sparrowhawk attack but looking more closely it looks more like a blackbird misjudged the depth of the snow. It's a proper snow angel either way.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
  • I had wing marks like that, only sooty ones, on my living room ceiling after letting a jackdaw out of the chimney...
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

The dippers are the same Ruby2. Lovely little birds too  :)

Lovely pix w.edges. Nothing worse than a confused duck.
Poor wee souls - hope they had a bit  of open water to get into!
Is it wrong that I laughed at the robin the other day when he had a little skate along the top of my pond? One of the blackbirds had a bit of a skite along it too.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

:D@cornelly When you see them like that it always makes me think the other one had done something like pushed them over. Or Mrs is saying not listening.

I like the snow angel too WE.

Fairygirl that is also a lovely picture, I did not know dippers did it too. Might have seen it on tv in the dim and distant, but don't remember. Wonder if they are related they have a little white "bib" too.  Off I go to search....

  • Fab pics everyone can't match those. We have a thrush singing morning & evening at the moment, first one for a long time. It sings from the top of a conifer in a garden a few doors away, too distant for a picture but at least we can enjoy the sound.
