Thanks for the replies everyone. Sorry about the scale. The plant was about five foot tall. It certainly looks like Arundo donax variegata. I don't want anything too huge but it looks nice and structural as a backbone for my cannas etc.

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Arundo donax 'variegata' ; got this in a massive pot as I overwinter in a cold greenhouse . Never flowered it yet though

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
