Agapanthus Help !

  • @rachydunnyt1fxy0vF In the UK the evergreen forms should spend winter underglass as they are not hardy.
Perhaps they have been OK outside if you live in south for the past few winters. This year we had wet followed by cold weather. I am not sure they will have survived. Are they in the ground or has your pot become waterlogged. Welcome!

Hi thanks for your reply. We do live in the south and they were in pots last winter but this winter in the ground and I fear I’ve neglected them 😱
  • @Slow-worm I think I will try the grit 👍
  • My cordylines have succumbed to the same fate!! 😱

@rachydunnyt1fxy0vF Cordylines can shoot from the base to form a multistemmed plant following a bad winter so fingers crossed. Gardeners are concerned about them all over the UK.  A question of wait and see with both I think.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

The amount of views has largely been from the original  responses to the OP's query [five + years ago ]  and a few new ones after that.   :)

Ironically, the evergreen Agapanthus aren't as hardy as the deciduous ones are  @rachydunnyt1fxy0vF . They usually need overwintering unless you live somewhere that never really gets any harsh weather. It's wet cold, or wet followed by a freeze, that causes the problem though, when foliage gets annihilated by that process - cells getting wet then freezing and bursting, and if it then goes back into the root system, that's the end for them. Dry cold is totally different, and they can manage a little of that.  :)

I normally notice the date, but I didn't this time! 😄
  • Sometimes I don't realise they are old posts. I still try to help but it gets confusing.

It [old threads] does sometimes make it a bit confusing - especially if you aren't under 27...

I'd better explain, in case you think I'm totally doolally -that's a reference to a comment on the forum that someone made many years ago - no one is older than 27 here. We all adopted it very quickly    :D
