poorer the ground the better, my friends from South Africa said they grow like weeds along the verges, dry dusty no water, seems harsh but that's what they said, she said they are a nuisance there, like weeds.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
Same with the one in my 1st pic above - still growing and spreading strongly, but not a hint of a bud. The rest are covered in flowers - never ending deadheading

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
Too much water. Not enough sun. Weeds in Brazil. If sown direct they will flower within a couple of months. I think the nursery grown plants are coddled. They look too tall to me.
Sorry got timed out. Try the dwarf form of Cosmos sulphureus. Sow them direct at the end of May, probably best not in Scotland, in poor soil & full sun, they will germinate within a week Only grow to 50cm, guaranteed to flower even in UK. I've done it. Good luck. Ian
I've had same problem this year. My ID picture shows border last year When cosmos were lovely. I've pulled most up as swamping other plants but left some at the back for their greenery. I've also grown annual coreopsis for the first time. They have been stunning so I'll certainly grow them again next year!
I started my cosmos from seed on March 5th this spring. I have them planted in four different places....four different soils and not a single one has a bloom.
in my one garden, I have two plants in the centre of my squashes for attracting bees. The plants are massive but not even a bud developing. I cannot blame the soil as I have other flowers doing extremely well there and in my other garden, I have a volunteer cosmo blooming away for over a month now, right next to my duds. I bought Pacific Northwest, Early sensation mix. Curious what everyone else has, who is having no bloom issues.
I suspect over watered, over loved and over fed - starve the darned things and they will flower away. Why do they need to bother when they get to grow to that size without making the effort to flower?

Such a shame.. You've waited all Summer for them to bloom. I hope they find out the cause..
