Sheps I absolutely loved this thread and what a lovely greenhouse. After saving for years (no holidays, no anything!) I finally managed to get my own in January this year and it's my pride and joy. I love the curtains idea - I'm going to try that myself at some point!
The only downside of the greenhouse is that I've got too carried away and sown so much that I now can't keep up with it I think I've spent a small fortune in compost this year!
@gilla.walmsley that's a lovely greenhouse, wish I had the room for one that big, looks just right.
Give the the curtains a try, very cheap to buy and set up, think mine cost about £10 all in, but you might need an extra curtain, they really do shade the plants.
Good luck with all your plants, think you are going to be busy.
When I moved here I brought a lot of very large lace curtains from my previous house. Not being able to use them in my small windowed cottage, and acquiring a 6x8 greenhouse free on Freecycle, other sites available, I draped the lace curtains over the outside of the greenhouse as shading. Perfickt! I am about to move on to my second set of curtains as the first has finally rotted into total disintegration. I was surprised they didn't blow away having only hooked them onto the corners of the frame of the greenhouse. I think my greenhouse is probably the only one in Cornwall with curtaining.
Morning all....today I noticed that my Sungold has terminated at the first truss, very much like bush varieties do
Is this common for a cordon or just unlucky?
There is a side shoot that I can try and promote ( red spot ) to try and get it back on track.
Yes, the side shoot will make a new leader. It's already heading upwards, so just gently tie it in to your support when it's long enough, and take out all the other side shoots that form so that the energy goes into that one. It should produce more trusses.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
I've just taken delivery of my first greenhouse - a second hand 4x6ft Halls Popular. I'll be usuing it for seedlings in spring and overwintering tender exotics in winter.
Any beginner tips greatly appreciated!

I recently fitted a second curtain wire so I can shade both sides of the plants, works very well.
@carletonexotic... I'm a bit of a newbie myself so I'd say plenty of ventilation during the Summer and make sure everything is wrapped up snug during Winter, though I'd guess it's going to be heated.

But mainly just enjoy it.
Thanks, yes I have a small bar heater to keep the frost off. I'll need it above 5 degrees C so will bubble wrap and hope that's enough. It's not a large space!
