Please can anyone identify this old climbing/rambling rose? It was in my garden when I moved in about 20 years ago and my late Mum loved it.She remembered it from her childhood when her Dad used to grow it in his orchard.I would love to be able to put a name to it!

Should you be able to post photos later, some other information that would be useful would be whether the rose flowers more than once, i.e. is  it a June flowering rose only, or do you get later blooms.  Does it have any scent, and if so what is it like.  Also a close up of the foliage and whether it has many thorns is also good to know...

So sorry - don't know what a dog rose smells like.

and haven't got any round here that I could go and smell.

It doesn't have very much of a smell at all!

That looks very much like Rosa 'American Pillar' http://www.davidaustinroses.co.uk/american-pillar

It's been a popular rose for quite a few years now - certainly since I was a child ... and that's quite a long while. image
