my runner bean plants are tall, strong and well watered. the flowers are in bloom (and indeed in some cases dying back) but there is no sign of any bean growth. any ideas welcome

Take a look at the thread called Bees Not DoingTheir Stuff on 10th August. It may help you.
Just posted about this. The bees in my garden are not pollinating the beans. They are punching holes in the back of the flower instead of entering it.
