Ivy

I have a wall of Ivy, which is normally no bother other than cutting it to keep it spreading too much.  But it's on some old trellis which has collapsed.  Again not the end of the world. But now I need to give it a huge cut (I plan to half it) so the old trellis will come off the wall.  Hope that makes sense.  So now I will be cutting if from the middle, do I literally just cut along? Or do I need to be more careful and do it in a specific way?

I'm not much of a gardener so apologies.

Look out for any birds nesting in your ivy . If you find any nests then  leave it for later in the year when they have gone and do it then.

I would reiterate what Dilly says.  Be very careful of nesting birds.  It is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act  to disturb nesting birds.  Old Ivy is an excellent plant plant for wildlife.  It flowers late benefiting pollinating insects when there is little else around and it berries in January and February when there is little around for the thrushes and other birds, especially in a hard winter.  The best time to cut it back is about late February or early March, after the berries but before birds start nesting.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
