    I didn't know if I was thinking a bit simple by thinking it was a beech??!

    Nope.  I agree it's a goat willow.  Get rid unless you have a large wildlife garden with a bog or pond.

    Where do they come from? They are always popping up in my garden and they are so deep rooted they're a hell of job to dig out. We haven't got any of those growing anywhere around!
