Can you put well rotted manure mixed in with compost for tomatos?
in Fruit & veg
hi!
Can you mix mix in well rotted farm yard manure in with multi purpose compost for planting tomatoes into?
im trying to avoid pre-fed compost as it leaves those strange little balls in the compost.
ive found an organic peat free multi purpose with worm casts from homebase from a company called new horizon.
I was just worried it might not have enough food in it for the tomato plants....
Thanks!!

I do in small amounts - about a fistful. I also add a fistful of worm compost. It all goes into a 10litre bucket. Seems to work well.
I plant mine in the g/h border to which I added a lot of well rotted farmyard manure last autumn, and they doing very well.
I used to grow them in pots and I used to use Levingtons mpc to which I added some JI3, but this year switched to Grow Wise with JI3 which I find has no household rubbish in it. But neither of these composts has slow release fertilisers (little balls) in them. They do have enough nutrients for the first 6ish weeks, then we must provide food, the usual one being Tomorite or home-made comfrey feed.
I can't see there's any problem with you adding FYM to your mpc.
The only thing it throws into uncertainty is how much nutrients are in your FYM, so when you start feeding with your chosen tomato food, you may be over-providing some nutrients, but is unlikely to be an issue as toms are such hungry beasts

Lovely thanks everyone! Will pot up now!
