Roses in basket
Bought rose plant from a garden centre. Ready to transfer it to a bigger pot since we do not have soil in our garden (front/back).
Just planting in compost is ok or should I buy soil. If so, where can I buy soil?
Many thanks in advance.

I would use John Innes no 3 compost which you can buy in good garden centres and DIY stores. It's a formula, not a brand, so there may be a choice. Use a decent sized pot, minimum 60cms wide and deep and feed it some slow release rose or tomato fertiliser every spring with occasional liquid feeds of rose or tomato feed from March to end of June between normal waterings.
In a pot it is entirely dependent on you for food and watering as planting composts only ahve food for 100 days at best. Feeding after early July can lead to soft new growth which doesn't have time to harden up before the winter frosts.
Dead head each bloom as it goes over so that you encourage more blooms to follow and, as long as it's a repeat flowerer, you can have flowers form late May to December.
I would get some John Innes No. 3 soil based (sometimes called loam based) compost - you should be able to get it quite easily from a garden centre.

Many thanks to Obelixx and Dovefromabove for the detailed and very useful advice. Will replant using John Innes 3. Got a month for it to get set in the new home I guess.
Many thanks.
