You could always turf it. That would solve your problems with stony soil.

It's a big area hogweed. Bit pricey I think!

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Thanks for your help. I am going to try to get it all like picture 1 & 2 and then give a small about of topsoil before seeding then. How much do you think i would need for 200 square metres?

A 0.75m3 builders bag of top soil will cover 15m2 at 50mm deep. I'd say you only want half of that at most to give you a good covering over the stones and something for the seeds to really establish themselves.

So I'd go for 7 bags of topsoil to cover your area.

Awesome. Thanks for your help ;)

How is the best way to spread the topsoil evenly across the ground? Do I do this by hand? Or lightly rake? My dad does have a lawn lute/levelawn I could borrow... Would that be any use at this point? Or at removing the surface stones actually? (hadn't thought of that till now) it looks like this...

Also, is ok to have the larger hardcore stones an inch or so down, I'd love to be able to prepare it so they arent visible to the surface (save my back),  before I put the half inch of topsoil on top? But it might mean some 50mm stones within 6 inches deep are quite common.

Thanks so much to you all again

    See original post

Revitalising an old thread. Would I be able to turf on top of this sort of surface? Or do all those stones need to go?

  • Hi all.

I've been very busy in the garden recently. Finally started to rotovate the ground ready to lay turf. I have had a go at treading then raking an area to gauge opinion on my stony ground and whether it is ok to lay turf right on top.

If anyone can help by answering if the below photos look acceptable to turf directly on top of id be very grateful.

  • Sorry, photos did not show for some reason. I've just tried again, but on my computer instead of my phone but same problem. Please view them here (including my before (4 weeks ago) & after):

So again, too stony for turf? It's been back breaking so far with LOTS of surprises, but stones you see in photos are max 30mm, kind of hardcore sized. Do i need to keep going do you think?

Thank you all so much for your continued help :)
