Brown and Dead Patches on Lawn

Hello,
This is my first post and I wondered whether you could help with a problem I am having in my garden in the UK.
About a month ago, some brown patches appeared on my lawn. I assumed it was due to lack of water. These brown patches have spread quite rapidly and is now black. The grass is now dead.
Would someone be able to help me find out what it is, what is causing this and what I can do to fix it?
