My elephant garlic did this; I think the odd spring and my general neglect triggered it but it's not uncommon as my professional gardening friend has had the same thing happen.
As Scroggin says all you need to do is cut off the flower and give it a wee feed.
Thank you, I'll snip it off tomorrow. There are so so many slugs around and they keep nibbling a millimetre out of the leaves half way up and then they don't look to happy, so it could be that.
Will tomato food be good or fish blood and bone or something else?

(that's wee as in little; probably best you don't urinate on your onuons).

If an onion has bolted do not attempt to store it, and use it first.
