Radishes

I picked my first radishes yesterday, a bit late I know.  They are growing in a raised bed in soil that was bought in a bulk bag from a reputable nationwide company.  Every single radish I pulled has been eaten.  Two of them had the criminals responsible still clinging to them! One, a baby slug, the other a very small thin worm/centipede-like creature.  Is there any way of eradicating them from the bed?  I have deliberately kept this bed for root crops so am desperate not to have creatures eating the crop below the soil.  Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Thanks Villaverde, Yes I might put some on, I use the sheep wool type.  My only worry because it was a baby slug that I may have more babies emerging from the soil having done their damage already!  We have the bed covered with a mesh cover over a frame to keep any airborne thugs off but I didn't think about a slug problem too much! I have some carrots growing in the same bed so I should think they will be suffering the same fate, aargh!

Thanks Scroggin.  It had occurred to me, I keep meaning to do a bit more research on them.  I am off to GW Live next week so will see if there's some info and or products.
