Dahlias from seed

Mary370Mary370 Posts: 2,003

I have had success growing dahlias from a packet of seed this year, (who knew?) but the plants look very spindly.  Can I pinch them, or will they fill out?  Some of them have small flower buds already, is it too late to pinch?

Would be grateful for any advice.

The one's i sowed in March are just coming into flower now.
Yours look quite sturdy and also look as if they will be quite bushy anyway. I think I'd leave them - and keep an eye on the slugs and snails. Looks like they've already started on the first one

Mary, what sort of dahlias are they? The dwarf ones used for bedding start to flower quite early on. Dead heading is all they need. The larger sort need pinching and some disbudding of secondary buds to make good heads.
