Acer

hi - can any of you experienced gardeners help me please? I have an Acer in a pot which was doing well in part shade spot in a pot (growing to about 20 inches) - I have moved it a week ago to a sunnier spot and many of the leaves have gone really brown and papery ? Is this because I have moved it or some other reason ? I was thinking of moving it to a larger pot because the pot is quite shallow? Would welcome any advice? Many thanks

Acers like woodland conditions (dappled sunlight) and are best kept out of direct sun - that said, I have 2 in full sun in the garden. They do ok, but by late summer there are quite a few crispy leaves.
Yours is in a pot, so the conditions are not ideal. I would think that new new leaves that have recently unfurled have now been scorched by the June sun.
I'd repot into a good size pot and move it back to a shadier spot - a little sun is ok, but you're after dappled sunlight if possible.

Wind can also do a lot of damage to Acer.

Especially if they are in pots/or newly planted and stressed.

    Sheltered, shade/semi shade is best.

When you say shallow Maureen - just how shallow?

Acers benefit from potting on by a little at a time too, so don't rush to put it in big pot if it's in a small one now. I'm guessing the pot it's in is smallish if it's only that height. Only pot it on when the roots are filling the pot, and only move it to one a little bit bigger so that it can get it's roots out gradually to fill the space.

A small plant of any kind needs to be kept a bit sheltered when small anyway, and Acers do prefer some dappled shade. They can take some sun if they're well established and doing ok, but try to keep them in a position that prevents them getting early morning sun as it can be an issue in frosty weather - hopefully that won't be a problem now though, unless you're in the very north of Scotland where there's been frost recently.

Not sure which Acer spp. you've got , but it sounds to me like it has been kept too dry . If a Japanese maple , most of them prefer light shade , moisture (preferably rainwater) and regular feeding to replace nutrients leached from the pot each time you water .

  • Thank you SO much for all the advice I will definitely use your suggestions - I can see now what might be going wrong !

    many thanks

Maureen - also make sure the medium you have it in is suitable. A soil based compost if it's going to be potted long term.

Although they need plenty of moisture, be careful that it isn't getting waterlogged either. Good drainage is necessary for your pot too. If you can raise it off the ground with little pot feet or similar, that will ensure excess water can get away image
