Selling Sunflowers at a car boot sale
in Plants
Hi Everyone,
One of my favourite things about summer is the fact that I can grow sunflowers and have a whole row of them a long my garden fence. I know sunflowers can be a bit of a love them or hate them thing but, judge me as you may, I adore them. They remind me of being a child and growing them with my Grandad.
I always seem to find though that I have loads of seeds left over, and often they will go to waste as I am terrible for mislaying seed packets. I thought about maybe planting some to sell as established plants at a car boot sale to use up the seeds and also raise a little bit of money for compost etc for next year.
I am just after some opinions as to whether you think this is worthwhile?
Thanks :-)

If you grew some other plants as well you might make a little after the outlay for the stall, compost, pots etc. Not a huge money maker though as annuals aren't going to fetch a huge price. If you think you'd enjoy the experience, have a go.

Thank you very much for your comments. I'm not too fussed on making a huge amount of money, I'd already have everything needed from my gardening anyway and would probably used some polypots so that I don't have to spend a huge amount on pots.
I'm very excited now and think I'm going to spend the weekend planting sunflowers! Happy gardening! :-)
Are you thinking of growing sunflowers for sale? I understood they really need to be planted where you want them to grow and they don't respond well to being moved.
It might also be a bit late in the season
I expect others might know a bit more about growing them, but not wasting money was my main thought .
'You must have some bread with it me duck!'
I think you're right iamweedy if they haven't been sown yet.

Too late for this year I'd have thought but as long as they were sown in individual pots and not in trays which needed subsequent dividing and potting on I'd have thought they'd be fine.
Surely its too late for this year? I always want to grow sunflowers; then forget til it's too late.
I love sunflowers too!! I agree, I would never plant seeds this late for my garden, yet it does say on the packets plant up until July. Maybe they grow faster when the weather is warmer. If I were you I'd give it a go, the seeds aren't expensive. Good luck!
I'm also a devoted sunflower lover and grow some every year, well, actually quite a lot usually. Anyway, it's definitely not too late to sow sunflower seeds. I often sow some early, in March, and then some in later months including June.
Sometimes as with this year, I was too busy, mainly with other people's gardens, to sow any seeds early on. I sowed a few yesterday and will sow some more over the next week. The good thing is that at this time of the year the seeds will germinate very quickly and sunflowers grow quickly.
With the mild winters we've had in Sheffield the last couple of years I've had sunflowers right into early December, although the late autumn and early winter storms can do a lot of damage.
I agree with other peeps who've mentioned that sunflowers don't transplant well so if you wanted to sell some you'd need to put them in decent sized pots at the outset. I have transplanted some in the past and they've never been as strong or vigorous as those sown direct into the ground or large pots.
But, if you're not looking to make a lot of money as you say, if you buy some cheap, big pots there's no reason why you couldn't sell some and make a small profit. I particularly like Nutcutlets idea of selling some other plants, too. An alternative if you have loads of seeds, as I always do, is to sell the seeds on eBay, as I've done in the past.
