Reducing size of Walnut tree.

BMLBML Posts: 151

There were very high winds yesterday in the Abingdon area and I could see the Walnut tree at the end of my garden receiving a real buffeting.  As the tree is very mature it worried me that branches may snap off falling on the speculative housing built with inches of my boundary.  As far as I’m concerned if any branches fell on property or people the other side of my boundary that’s their problem, I didn’t ask them to build houses on farming land.

However much as it irks me I have given thought to reducing the height of the Walnut tree by a third but I wonder if that would lead to its demise and if not what time of the year could one carry out such work.

I agree.  Better to raise the crown by lifting a few of the lower branches then thin the rest by judicious removal of some of the upper branches to reduce wind resistance whilst maintaining the shape of the tree.   Ask for more than one quote and also check they have the a qualification and insurance and ask if they take away what they remove or leave it for you to deal with.

Good advice above. Walnut trees can become huge so better to keep it in check now. That way it should be possible to contain it while still keeping it looking good and reasonably naturalistic.
