Clematis growing through rose

I like the idea of clematis growing through roses, but what happens when the rose needs pruning, as it is my understanding that all roses need to be pruned. Also, what about the clematis, would it drag on the rose and damage it?

There are different types of clematis.
Group 3 clematis are probably what you're best looking for.

These clematis are cut right back to 6"-12" above the ground in early spring and all the previous years growth removed, then you can prune your rose.
I have a clematis Madame Julia Correvon (type 3) growing through a star jasmine and works well

Agree with Pete8. The group 3 Clematis is the most suitable for growing amongst roses. They flower at the same times and create the impact you will be looking for. In the winter time or early spring, just make sure all the Clematis stems are cut to around a feet from ground level and they will just start growing new shoots every year. If your climbing/rambling roses are established, it's mainly about training Clematis to your rose framework.
By the time the Clematis start working its way through your roses, the leaves will have started growing back, and you should have already had the branches tidied and pruned to the way you want your roses to grow. Throughout the year, any dead-heading will not really interfere with the Clematis.
Thanks for the advice.
