After Cotinus finishes flowering do the frothy bracts drop off or do these grow into the new branches? I don't want ours to be any bigger and so will prune them off if it's the latter.

the flowers won't grow into branches but the shrub will continue to grow.
Some people prune these back really hard every year, you don't get the flowers but the leaves are bigger and the shrub doesn't become enormous.

If you are going to prune, do it in late winter and not now.
