my equisetum japonicum has many black stems they seem to burn from the base upward as some are green from halfway up. The plant stands in maximum 6" water in a 19cm pot.
So do mine Paul. They've been in the pond about 10yrs, not grown a lot and some get big black splodges. I just cut off the ones that look bad and leave the rest.
But I'd also be keen to know the cause and if there's a remedy

Mine are in shade all day long - which may well explain it Philippa. It's about the only part of the pond that the koi leave alone, so apart from a huge lily, the horsetail is the only other plant. In 10 ys it's probably increased in size about 10-15% and the clump is barely 12"across
