Cytisus

We have been given a Cytisus battandieri also known as a Pineapple Broom.  Does anyone have this growing in their garden or could pass on any tips concerning this plant.  The label says the plant has a pineapple scent - how strong is this scent?

  • Thanks Philippa, it is obviously a very attractive tree from your description and enjoys your garden and we want to plant it in the correct area for it to mature into a healthy tree here.  Is yours in a sheltered or windy area, and what type of soil do you have?

The neighbours cat was very taken with it when the tree arrived- (which is still in the shop bought pot), and ALMOST started eating it.  Does it still flower even after the sparrows have pulled off the leaves?

GD - you need to get to know the RHS website and plant database - https://www.rhs.org.uk/Plants/156323/Argyrocytisus-battandieri/Details

I'm not sure it's a good idea for cats to eat it.

I've known it grow very happily trained in the manner of a wisteria against a warm wall in a walled garden. The perfume on a warm evening was lovely.

  • I can't say that I have ever noticed this plant before, so it is lovely to have something a little different to grow in our garden.  At the moment we are favouring planting on a bank down one side of our driveway, but it can get quite windy along there at times.

Don't worry Obelixx - he didn't actually eat the plant, but he had a good sniff of it - perhaps he lacks pineapples in his diet!
