Rowan tree

my rowan tree looks like it has shrivelled up the leaves are all dried up and the berries have gone but at the bottom of the tree a bush of rowan seems to be growing quitter green and happy - I am no gardener but am quite attached to this tree as my late husband planted it approx. 4 years ago.

sounds like either its dried out or there's some damage to the main trunk (fungal/bacterial) have a look above any growth and see if you can see any damage or weeping wounds.
also give the tree a good drink
Do you have any rowan aphids there? are the leaves curling inwards? ants present?
