It's definitely not japanese knotweed, I'm happy to say. I'd agree it's black bryony. I've not had experience with this but I'd expect it to be susceptible to glyphosate weedkiller, as your bindweed will be too. If they are growing through plants you want to keep, you'll have to disentangle them carefully so you kill only the weeds...
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
It's definitely black bryrony. The roots aren't easy to dig out so glyphosate may be the best solution. A strong product can kill it off for good within a few weeks.
If worried about spraying other plants, you could brush it onto both sides of several leaves with a small paint brush. Wear rubber gloves and eye protection though!!!
It would be ideal to treat leaves that haven't got flower stalks, so that bees etc aren't harmed by weedkiller (or snip the flowers off).

I love the shiny leaves of Black Bryony, it looks perfectly at home in the photo, seems a shame to be talking about poisons
In the sticks near Peterborough
I know but sadly it is through the roses, honeysuckle, clematis as well as some sturdier shrubs and choking them.
Thanks again for the advice.
I have White Bryony or Devil's turnip so this it interesting for me to see.
Something I read recently said (for bindweed) to put a stake in nearby for it to climb up which will isolate it from your other stuff.
Shield the other stuff and spray the weed that has grown up the temporary support with systemic weedkiller.
Seemed sensible to me.
