Viola for 2018

KiliKili Posts: 1,104

Hi guys, I have some Viola and pansy seed which I thought I'd have a go at growing from seed for next year.

On the packets from Dobies it states sown from Feburay onwards prick out and transplant seedlings to trays and grow on.

'transplant seedlings to trays'  As I've not ever grown seed for planting in the spring how fast do Viola and Pansy grow over the winter, and how deep do these trays have to be?.

Any advice appreciated

Regards

Kili

Sow in a seed tray like any other seeds, but they wont germinate in heat so you may have to wait until September now.

when theyve grown to about two inches tall, or have two to three sets of real leaves, prick out and put into modules or another tray, keep potting on as they fill the pot or whatever you put them in,  you can then plant them out next Spring.

Had you done them in Feb or March you could have planted them out in autumn around daffs or tulips, but with a late sowing you can't plant out until next Spring.
