Wisteria - a second chance

I have a wisteria that was bought at either Lidl or Aldi (or maybe Wilkinsons) many years ago.  After seven years it didn't flower and by about ten years I decided that I would dig it up and buy a new one that was in flower (as recommended).

Believe it or not it flowered that summer!  It also flowered the following year.  The pergola was a bit tatty and I got someone it to put in a cross brace/top bit.  The following year it didn't flower and when I checked it more closely the whole thing had died.  I began to chop it down and when I got to the bottom I saw that the wood was still "wet". Within a few weeks a little sprout appeared and within months I had two nice stems up to the top. They are about the thickness of my finger.

My question is thisimage

Will I have to wait years and years for flowers or will the mature root ensure that I have flowers next year?  I have no idea why there is a picture of my cousin's birthday cake on here.  I tried to delete it and get the wisteria picture up!!!  Sorry!

Beautiful cake. I think you might have to wait a few years before you get any flowers from that root.

    Hi Ladybird4

Oh dear,  That's what I was worried about.  Serves me right for being a tight wad all those years ago!  The current wisteria is very pleasant looking and nicely twined around the pergola post so I am not too worried at the moment.  The climbing roses and clematis on the other side make up for the lack of flowers on the wisteria side!

My Dad made the pergola and I have held onto it for sentimental reasons but it is a bit like Trigger's broom from Only Fools and Horses - it's all genuine, just three new handles and two new heads!!!  Or like the HMS Victory - so much new wood that there is nothing original left.  I might get a new pergola  and a new clematis to go with it.  Until then I will still enjoy it.

Cherish the root, it wants to grow and eventually you will get it to flower again.

I finally managed to get the picture I wanted thanks to some help. M finger is at the original cut and the bit above is the new stem (funny angle, sorry)

The new growth, still quite pretty even without flowers.
