Nose care

Isn't it odd - not matter how cold the weather, you never see a TV gardener with a runny nose?  And isn't it a pain to have to down tools, take off gloves, rummage in your pocket for an increasingly muddy handkerchief?  When my husband's large handkerchiefs get worn and tatty, I appropriate them for garden use.  One in the pocket for when I need a good blow, and one wrapped round  my wrist and secured with a rubber band so I can wipe away a dewdrop in an instant.

It's what gloves are for...not that I oftne wear them in the garden.

In which case - that's what sleeves are for....image

But I often garden with an audience, as I volunteer in a local public park.  Handkerchief is a bit more refined.  At home, I use my sleeve like everyone else.

Philippa - a big advantage of hillwalking in winter is the gloves - nice big fleecy ones. They're ideal. The lighter ones for spring or autumn are never as absorbent  image

Crickey!  It's not just me then.  I always start to sneeze or get a runny nose when I am in the garden.  I now keep a handy box of tissues just inside the patio door so I can have a good old blow just in case I don't have a tissue on me.

It's still a pain having to come in to use the "little girls room" especially when my hands are filthy and I have to take off my footwear....grrrr.

I've improved on the man's handkerchief and rubber band system.  I'm busily upcycling worn bedlinen into these elasticated cuffs for nosewiping.  I get eight of them out of a pillowslip.  I'm hoping to make enough to give all my gardening friends two each for Christmas, one to wash and one in use.

    Doesn't anybody sniff nowadays?

  • I use a square of kitchen roll - more robust than tissues and can be used to wipe trowel handles etc, though not before you use it on your nose!
