Strange fungus on Acer?

Can anyone help with this strange fungus (?) on my acer?  The acer is young and this has only just started to appear.  It is not all over, just at the base and a little up the trunk and one on a branch.

Hopefully I wont have to destroy it, any help is gratefully received.

Thank you.

It's not a fungus but an infestation of scale insects.  Rub them off quick as the white waxy stuff showing below them indicates they have eggs about to hatch.  A plastic scraper or a very stiff scrubbing brush and a pair of gloves should do it.  A bucket of soapy water might help, too.
