What is the quickest way to get rid of mares tail ?

There are loads of threads on the same subject. The basic answer is that there isn't a quick way to get rid of them. There's a chemical treatment called Kurtail which some people say works well, another suggestion is adding lime to the soil.
My method, which keeps them at bay for a year or so, is to trample on them then spray with Roundup or SBK brushwood killer. Even that is only a temporary solution. If the numbers are small, repeatedly pulling each stem is said to weaken the growth.
IMHO there's no quick way to get rid of it, nor a slow way either.
I've never known anyone totally eradicate it.
Thank you. It's on an allotment surrounded by veg so perhaps not weedkiller. Will try breaking and digging it out for now.
