I too had some tricky part shade areas under a tree with slopy bits. I find that acers and my phormium stands out nicely. It is trial and error and has also taken 4 years to look ok.
Campanula will make good groundcover in the mean time. I think it would be wise to go for plants that do well in partial shade. Sorry about the flipped pictures. They're the right way up in my phone.
