According to my brother they are very tasty when battered. We remove them to encourage the energy into the courgettes. We have always done this and are happy with the amount of courgettes produced. Yes one a day Torg. we give away or sell our surplus, we used to supply to local shops.

That's an amazing yield. I just hope the slugs don't get to them before I do. They look ok at present.

I was told that its best to pick them when they are around 4inch in length to promote more courgette to grow. Does that sound about right?

Yes, scroggin is right - we usually pick at 6", and you will be eating them, freezing them, giving them away.  However they are delicious fried in butter, add crushed garlic for extra zing, o.k. for colour in stews or casseroles in winter if you freeze some. We freeze ours dry.  I have been known to make courgette soup but it wasn't a huge favourite - again add garlic or herbs for flavour.

Large ones get spiralised and microwaved to have like spaghetti with bolognaise sauce.  Ideal if you want to reduce carbs.

Sounds fantastic, I can't wait! I have just planted it into a raised bed today, very excited, hopefully it has plenty of room to grow, I'll post a picture soon!

Do you feed your courgettes with tomato food or something similar GD?

  • I think we are supposed to, but we use a cheap multipurpose food from B&Q, for most of our veg (tomatoes, cucs, courgettes, squash) and all our potted flowering plants too.  We do use garden homemade compost and a bit of manure when preparing the courgette bed - they like a good mix of manure or similar and plenty of water as the plants and fruits grow so rapidly.
