Following Borderline's thought, you could, for ease etc, put a raised bed along the edge, or a series of smaller raised beds. I don't know if this would fit with your aesthetic / desires. It could be a good op to grow veg, cut flowers, wildlife friendly plants. Could be brick built, wood, terraced layers etc. Could put in an area of fruit bushes like currants or blueberries which might quickly / right off hide the hole. Raised beds are 'no dig' so need to dig over, rotivate, pre-weed the ground etc.  Just a thought.

Ok thanks for everyone's responses. I'm trying to draw up a rough plan and will work it from there but you've certainly given me some good ideas.

One thing I noticed today is that I dug a bit of ground up where I wanted to put the flower bed just to test how hard the ground is. The area is covered in weeds but there is already a weed membrane below it. I was going to use a turf cutter and then lay down a new weed membrane on top of that. Do I have to take up the old one first? I think the current one goes under the entire lawn so not sure what to do!!!

Not sure as it all depends on how deep the original membrane is. If it's shallow, I would imagine a possible water logging situation if you carried on laying another new layer. Might be best to ask this question on the "problem solving" forum on this site as I'm sure many will have experience in this field.

    Thanks for your reply.

It is quite deep (deeper than the new one I was doing to put down). ok I'll ask in the problem solving section.

Planters wont really work under so much deep shade. Best to either leave it to grow back or plant a shade loving small shrub underneath such as berberis, cottoneaster or maybe a dwarf rhododendron.

All these 3 grow pretty flowers or berries at various times. Depends on how quick you want results really.
