Dwarf Helianthus (sunflowers)-which is the lowest growing?

young codgeryoung codger Posts: 543

I'm interested in the dwarf  sunflowers, of which there appears to be quite a few varieties.

Reading up about them online has not really provided me with an answer. For example, the same variety can be described as growing to two different  heights depending on who is writing the description.

As usual, I find myself consulting this forum where invariably I get the answer that I need.

So, basically I just need to know which specific variety is the lowest growing in terms of height. (I'm wanting to put them in front of taller plants).

Thanks.

    Choco - sun variety:

Below is an example of what I refer to about conflicting details. One writer stating a height of 30-35cm (source, scroll down to "A short story") http://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/how-to-grow/the-year-of-the-sunflower--meet-the-new-varieties-and-colours/
Choco Sun’, reaching only about 12-15in (30-35cm), is a cheerful charmer.

In contrast the same plant is described on this site as growing to a height of 1.5mt http://www.gardenersworld.com/plants/plant-finder/helianthus-annuus-choco-sun/

    Someone has incorrect information?

I don't know about that one, I am growing Teddy Bear which is also suppose to be short,

they are only seedlings at the moment so will wait and see.

Reading up on them they vary from 40cms to 1.5mts.!

I have seen these for sale I'm Morrisons in pots, so I would think if you kept it in a pot it would, as anything will in pots, stay small. If given the right conditions it will grow tall.

I have just been looking at them Teddy Bear seeds on flea bay. They describe them as suitable for baskets. I had thought about some, and wondered about how small the flower heads would be. I suppose the smaller the plant, the small the heads will be?

I will be interested to hear how you get on with these Lyn.

(There are some red varieties of sun flowers available which seem interesting).
