Fritillaria bulb problems

Very disappointed in my first attempt to grow Fritillaria. The pic shows my pot as of yesterday (28/5/17). Sadly it looks nothing like to Gardener's World pic from September 2016 magazine where I took my inspiration from!
Any advice as what I've done wrong and will them come again next year if I look after them like other bulbs?

Would have thought they needed a very deep and big pot for the best planting depth. ..... and good drainage. Perhaps put htem in the ground with a good handful of grit in the planting hole.
