What plant to use to underplant roses

    As they are climbing just after something for the ground cover and to compliment the roses

    debs64 i first noticed the salvia i have in the Sarah Raven  summer brochure 

    She has several salvias but only mentioned about the blackspot with the salvia Nachtvlinder

    I would plant Aquilegia , very hardy, happy to play second fiddle to a prize rose but certainly lots of interest in their own right.

    I have  lots of aquilegia in other parts of the garden so trying to find something different but thank you for the suggestion!

    What about London Pride? A rather old fashioned flower now but very low i.e. No maintenance. Evergreen with pretty flowers. Easy to control if necessary. A good do-er in my garden. Pachysandra is another one that looks good all year round. 

    i also would suggest persicaria but it looks pants in winter.

    Lizzie, don't know where you are but salvias are not hardy here in Scotland. I am trying one this year that is supposed to be hardy, but all the other ones I have tried have never made it through a winter.

    Purple toadflax looks good with roses and seeds anywhere except shade.

    In London. Keen but lazy.

    I have Lavender under my roses, it keeps the greenflies away

    Eila I have nachtvlinder and several other salvias so will be giving it a go
