Nicotiana & Dhalias

I wondered if some experienced gardeners can advise me on a few things.. I am trying to grow flowers (as growing veg was a disaster!) I have some Nicotiana plug plants.. I have put them in pit's and they are currently in the greenhouse. They seem to be healthy enough but have long bendy stalks, is this normal? When do I plant them out?

I also bought potted Dhalias.. can I plant these straight out now and will these attract earwigs? If so shall I plant them separate from other flowering plants to prevent them damaging flowers? Any advice welcome.

Earwigs are not too great a problem.  Catch them in flowerpots stuffed with straw inverted on sticks among the dahlias.

Harden the nicotiana off and plant them out in the garden. It sounds as if they are about to come into flower.

  • Great I will do that, thanks both. Do either of you know anything about Rudbeckia? I planted one out in the garden about a week ago and it was perfecrly healthy.. now all its leaves have curled up and have gone brown and crispy? I have watered it at the end of the hot days and also hardened it off so I'm not sure what's happening to it? ?

Could be the roots were congested and can't take advantage of the water you give them.  Did you soak the plant well before you planted it?

  • No! Is there anything I can do now to get it going again do you think? Didn't know I should have done that

Stick your finger in the compost it was originally potted in. If bone dry, dig up and chuck it in a bucket of water for a few hours then replant it, and see if it comes back.

However I wonder if it might be something else. I bought some Scabiosa a fortnight ago and left them out in the garden. They went limp, and the leaves basically died, despite being well watered. 90% certain this was because they were from B&M Bargains in shelved racks where they get very little light, and they bring the plants indoors at night. So the plants were not used to outdoor conditions at all really. I should have nursed them in a sheltered spot out of direct sun.

  • Thanks WillDB I will give it a go. I have some more Cherry Brandy Rudbeckia plugs in the greenhouse at the mo so at least I have another chance - the ones I planted were nice yellow ones. Fingers crossed!
