philadelphus
I have 3 Philadelphus about 4 years old . They have become big bushes about 6 foot tall and 3 foot wide. I get very few flowers maybe 4 or 5 on each bush . I prune them back each year quite hard but still get all leaf and few flowers. They are healthy . Can anyone advise me on how to get them flowering please. Thank you

When do you prune them? I prune mine immediately after flowering, taking off flowered shoots, and some of the old wood. The new wood then has time to ripen and flower for next year.
I think it depends on when your pruning it sooty. I have a new one (only a couple of years old) and it hasn't flowered yet.
From what I've read and been told, they flower on old wood, that's branches formed the previous year. If you've been pruning yours in autumn you might have cut out the flowering stems. I think you're supposed to cut it back after it's flowered, like a weigela.
Not sure on flowering times. Early summer seems to be a guide. No sign of buds on mine yet in NW England

Yes thank you Fidget and Kitty I have pruned them late spring as i've always thought that was right . I prune them hard though as they are so big for my small garden , but i do so want them to flower as the fragrance is wonderful
