Thirsty tree?

Hi,

After much deliberation and discussion with neighbours, I'm having a 70ft Lombardy poplar tree felled next month.

The tree is located at the end of my 60ft garden and provides good coverage from over the back. The tree has started to shed heavy branches in high winds, and we've had some elderly neighbours express concerns.

The problem we have is that there is a natural spring next door, and the Poplar must be helping to mop it up. During the winter it gets quite boggy at that and of the garden, but is fine during the summer.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a tree (or two) we could plant which would help with this problem? Evergreen would be great for privacy, but it needs to be a manageable size (it's costing a fortune to have the Poplar down, and I don't want to have to do it again!)

Many thanks in advance.
