trouble under fir trees
Hi, my clients have 2 very large fir trees in their front yard. They are constantly shedding cones, needles, and branches of all sizes. There is no grass growing under them at all, only weeds. I am always having to rake up many bags of 'stuff'. The clients want to put down bark mulch, but it would soon be covered in 3-4" of needles, so then how can I rake? I'm puzzled as to how to cope with this ongoing problem. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Philippa, thanks for your reply. The amount of needles that fall is insane, like 4" deep if I leave it for a few months. So the bark mulch would be completely covered and look terrible. I plan on using old carpet as a weed barrier, so there won't be any weeds. I just wonder if buying all that mulch is worth it, if I can't rake up the needles and cones. Ongoing discussion. Thanks again.
I'd agree with Philippa. If that's they want you to do - it's their money to waste!
There isn't likely to be a simple solution - other than removing the trees and replacing them with something more suitable for maintenance. Perhaps they'll realise when the bark they pay for is no longer visible
