NOt at all weedy. I wouldn't put a one trick pony conifer in a small space either, especially north facing where there is less light. I'd want something to brighten up the space, not dull it down.

A massive thank you to everyone for going to so much trouble for me. It's not that I am particularly in love with conifers, it's more the long narrow shape I am looking for. I shall be looking into all of the suggestions you have given me.
i am in complete agreement about Leylandii and am worried that my next door neighbours have planted some in their garden, fingers crossed I am wrong.

Maybe an intervention by a timely word of advice to someone who is about to plant a monkey puzzle tree in the front garden of a 1930s semi.
There is such a tree I pass when walking into our small town but it is already there!
